The simulated pop-up and the page behind it are actually part of a full-screen advertisement hosting a spyware trap. These fake pop-ups should be treated with extreme caution as they can eventually become much more than an annoyance. Though very rare, some legitimate companies will deploy what they term as desirable or useful pop-ups on their site.

A popup can mean several things: 1. A popup is a window which appears on screen in response to some command or program. Examples of useful popups are help files and information files which "pop up" over an existing screen in response to hot-key or mouse-over requests. 2. Do not click anything in the pop-up. You may need to force your browser to quit. When you restart your browser, don't reopen your previous tabs, and don't click the link you visited immediately before you got that virus warning. If you clicked an ad in a pop-up on a free streaming site, you may want to scan your computer for viruses and malware.
